Celestial Alignments & Ancient Monuments-Ancient Egypt

Celestial events provide seasonal cues and clues, but why did the ancients align their structures with nature and the “Heavens”?

Ancient Egypt-Kemet was very detailed when building ancient monuments, pyramids, observatories, and temples. They made sure to align their structures precisely according to celestial events. The ancient Egyptians were very aware of the celestial events that took place in the “Heavens” and how these events impacted everything on Earth. Based on advanced knowledge of astronomy, cosmology, mathematics, and astrology, they built specific places on Earth to keep track of cosmic events. Celestial events can provide seasonal cues, but why did the ancients align monuments with the moon and stars?

Here are some structures in Egypt aligned with celestial events and Cardinal Points:

The Great Sphinx and Pyramid of KhafreOn the spring and fall equinox, an unusual phenomenon occurs. When the Sun rises on the date of either equinox, you can witness the Sun settle directly onto the right shoulder of the Sphinx as it nears the horizon. It is also at this angle, the Sun sits behind the Sphinx at the southern corner of the Pyramid of Khafre (the Second Tallest of the three Pyramids).

North, south, east, and west are nearly perfectly aligned with The Great Pyramids of Giza. Compass points are aligned with the four faces of Egyptian pyramids. In the Big Dipper and Little Dipper constellations, two stars named Aton and Atum were used to align the pyramids North-South. Additionally, the pyramids are aligned with Orion’s belt and aligned with Earth’s center. The largest at Giza was designed for Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), known as The Great Pyramid, and is also aligned with the cardinal points with accuracy.

The Red Pyramid at Dahshur is rotated slightly counterclockwise from the four cardinal points.

During the winter solstice at Karnak Temple, the solstice sunrise is visible through the temple’s entryway. One of the most important ancient Egyptian deities, “Ra”, the Sun God, was born during this time. At the beginning of the winter season, ancient Egyptians set certain standards and made specific astronomical calculations to announce this phenomenon.

Hatshepsut Temple: On the same day of the winter solstice, thousands of tourists and Egyptians are enchanted by the beautiful reflection of the sun in Luxor’s Deir el-Bahari, the most important temple of Queen Hatshepsut.

The Divine Birth House at the Temple of Dendera is illuminated by the sun every February 4 and November 8.

On September 6 and April 7, the sun’s rays illuminate the Holy of Holies of the ancient Temple of Hibis, located in the New Valley.
